This book offers a glimpse into the world of a young woman’s struggle with mental illness. Initial themes include anguish, heartbreak and despair. Shame, emptiness and self-blame arise, as well as rape and sexual assault. The inevitable costs of mental illness become apparent, including negative projections and expectations. Although dark and bleak at times, courage eventually opens the door to vulnerability with mental illness – which allows the reader to appreciate the torment and suffering – as well as self-compassion, acceptance, strength and realizations.
