“When I am an old woman I shall wear purple…… And make up for the sobriety of my youth..” This anthology includes poems, essays and short stories offering a glimpse into the lives, challenges and realities of women and aging. Themes include authenticity, defiant individuality, love, respect, acceptance, self worth and perseverance – as well as societal views on beauty, aging, loss and mental illness. With sixty authors from a variety of backgrounds, the tones are broad in scope and depth – ranging from heart warming, courageous and hilarious – to sobering, nostalgic or depressing. Contributors include poets, writers, journalists, photographers, artists and academics. Of note, some started to write poetry later in life – in their fifties, sixties and seventies. Despite publication over thirty years ago, many themes and issues continue to hold powerful significance to this day.
